There are many drugs that may be used following amputation. Make sure your health care provider is aware of any allergies or adverse reactions to any medications used in the past. The following provides some examples of medications that may be used and their purpose.
Antibiotics-antibiotics may be used before and after surgery to prevent infection at the incision site.
Pain Relievers-strong narcotics may be used initially for pain, such as Morphine or Demerol (Meperidine). They may be given continuously via intravenous or on an as-needed basis, by the intravenous, intramuscular, or oral route. Patients may wish to discuss pain relief methods with their doctor prior to surgery, if possible.
