Paraplegia
Paraplegia is the consequence of catastrophic injury or more specifically due to spinal cord injury or congenital condition, causing impairment in motor and/or sensory function of the lower extremities. Paraplegia injures the neural elements of the spinal canal of thoracic, lumbar, or sacral regions. Paraplegia is a big problem because whenever it happens to anyone, he/she has to face mental, physical, and financial crisis and need medical care for long time, in some cases for rest of the life.
However, the consequences of paraplegic injury can be very dangerous. As it happen due damage of spinal cord therefore, paraplegic person could not be able to use either legs, hands or may be both. In fact, injured person does not feel any sensation; consequently, he/she will not be able to give any command to his/her either legs or hands. Hence, there is possibility of it that individual may become handicapped permanently if required medical treatment is not given timely and properly. The other disabilities caused by paraplegia are – impotency and various sorts of urinary and fecal incontinence; not only this, the cumulative effects of these disabilities may cause many medical complications including decubitus (pressure sores), thrombosis and pneumonia. However, physiotherapy and various assistive technologies, like standing frame etc could prevent these complications.
Moreover, for paraplegic men and paraplegic women there are plenty of high-tech robotic legs and wheel-chairs present which are quite helpful for paraplegic men and paraplegic women. Advanced wheel chair and robotic legs offer very much comfort and people could walk on their own with the help of these devices. Besides, there are many paraplegic rehabilitation centers available which are dedicated for treatment to the people who are suffering from Paraplegic. | |
