Head Injury Symptoms
Any injury to the head is potentially serious as it could have caused brain trauma. The brain controls the activities of the body and when particular parts of the brain are injured they affect certain parts of the body. There are certain head injury symptoms to look for when there has been a blow to the head or a penetrating injury to the head. By noting the symptoms a physician can more easily determine which part of the brain sustained the trauma. The most serious area of the brain to be injured is the brain stem as this regulates breathing, swallowing, balance, dizziness, and sleep. If a person is exhibiting any of these symptoms after an accident, they should go immediately to a hospital as they might need a ventilator.
There are injuries to the head in different amounts of intensity. A mild blow to the head might just cause a concussion which bears watching, but does not require hospitalization. In a mild to moderate head injury symptoms are dizziness, severe headache, vomiting, and inability to concentrate on simple thoughts. If a person is unconscious even for a short period of time after an accident involving the head, they should receive medical care as soon as possible.
Some head injury symptoms go away after a period of time. If there has been brain swelling causing some of the symptomatology, a physician can sometimes relieve this by removing fluid from the area. The brain itself can swell due to injury and then the swelling can reduce either spontaneously or with surgery. These are some of the reasons that the amount of recovery that a head injury patient will have is uncertain for a while. Even when a patient is moved to a rehabilitation site, there is no definite answer as to how much of their full function will return. In the meantime, the family that may have been looking to this patient for financial support is in a strange situation. Their family member cannot work right now, but might be able to in the future. They have no idea how much help the patient will need when they come home. Many times the particular accident or incident was not the patient's fault. They might have been hit by a piece of a crumbling building, they may have been in automobile accident or they could have been shot.
